All Students in Grades 8 - 12

This semester, students will be working through a Goal Setting and Core Competency reflection with their teacher, specifically focusing on THINKING. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

1. What are Core Competencies?

The Core Competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiency that all students need in order to engage in deep, lifelong learning.

2. Why is it important to complete this exercise?

By design, the Core Competencies (Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social) underpin the entire provincial curriculum and are central to the development of educated citizens. Integrated self-reflection across the school year ensures that students are mindful of their growth in the Core Competencies. As self-reflection becomes a natural part of the learning process, it promotes personalization, inclusion, diversity, and student engagement.

3. Is my someone marking this work?

These reflections are not graded by teachers, but are required by the Ministry. This is really an exercise for your (student's) own growth as a learner. The process infuses learning with personal meaning and emphasizes working toward future possibilities while developing the confidence, knowledge, and competencies necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. These processes ensure that students are the authors of their learning stories.

4. As a parent how can I see my student's goals and self-reflections?

Students are asked to take home their completed Goal Setting and Reflection document at the end of each semester. We encourage parents and guardians to ask your student(s) about their Core Competency goals and action plan and support facilitating development and learning opportunities related to specific goals; this may include introducing students to suitable resources, opportunities, or community partners relevant to their goals.
